Rachel Varghese: Fall 2023 Intern Feature Series
Rachel Varghese, a student at Lansdale Catholic High School, served as a Fall 2023 Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Intern for Girls Code the World. Outside of GCTW, she is involved with: STEM Honors Program, Community Service Corps, Instrumental Band, and the All Catholic Orchestra in Philadelphia.
Rachel strongly values that all girls should be provided the resources to excel in their abilities and the freedom to explore the field, which GCTW emphasizes. By participating, she was able to share her love of STEM and make an impact that encourage girls to have the confidence to take it to the next level.
As a Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Intern at Girls Code the World, Rachel played a big role in the idea of creating an inclusive atmosphere within our organization and benchmarking various societal issues and infographics that can be incorporated into our practices to bring awareness. Additionally, the position required extensive research with the goal of improving certain aspects of the organization, such as the onboarding process, and reaching out to businesses/organizations that have similar missions/values to GCTW.
“Girls Code the World taught me how to be adaptable to the situation at present and find alternatives when your first plan doesn’t run smoothly.”
Rachael shared with us that she has learned things that will continue to stick with her as I move forward in her academic and professional career. “To help make all of the events at GCTW successful, a lot of planning and preparation goes on behind the scenes. Even through the process, there may be bumps and things that do not work out as expected. That’s the challenging and exciting thing about working with a nonprofit.”
