Spring 2024 Internship

We are Girls Code the World, a nonprofit organization that aims to empower young girls in STEM, not only by encouraging them to enter related fields, but by becoming leaders and instilling confidence through mentorship. Our projects and curriculum focus on real-life applications to coding, natural sciences, and engineering.

Current Open Roles

Partnerships

Build relationships with organizations, companies, resources, and communities that offer something inspiring to our network. In exchange, you will facilitate how GCTW continues to give back to the world through education and mentorship. This could include:

  • Applying to grants

  • Building relationships with high school and college chapters of women’s empowerment or STEM-focused organizations

  • Benchmarking the fundraising strategy of other nonprofits to advise our own

  • Connecting us with corporate sponsors or engagement opportunities

Technology

Translate your skills in software, technology, and computer science to make sure our website and other data systems are modernized. This could include:

  • Transferring our website from Squarespace 7.0 to 7.1

  • Modernizing our website, such as improving the load speed (especially on the homepage) using Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool

  • Ensuring we are using Squarespace’s SSL option

  • Improving our site navigation and our SEO

  • Building better processes for updating content on the site within our workspace

Marketing, Communications, and Public Relations (MCPR)

Showcase what makes our organization so special, ranging from our incredible volunteers & employees all the way to our unique curriculum. You will play a part in sharing the stories, statistics, and passion behind this organization. This could include:

  • Content creation for the organization's website, blog, or newsletter

  • Managing social media accounts, engaging with similar organizations and potential users of our materials

Subscription Program Launch

Help us launch our Subscription-Based Program. We want to target families who are more rural, don’t have after-school or summer program options, and are looking to bring STEM into their homes. This could include:

  • Reaching out to corporate and organizational partners to see if they would be interested in sponsoring a month of lessons

  • Developing a marketing strategy

  • Planning out the supply chain/logistics/costs to source and ship out materials on a monthly basis

Mentorship

Make every woman who comes into our network feel seen and heard by finding diverse role models, facilitating meaningful relationships, and giving them an opportunity to build confidence. This could include:

  • Utilizing your college network to connect the nonprofit with potential partners, sponsors, or other organizations that can help further our mission

  • Planning and executing events for our mentorship network to get together

  • Sharing scholarships, conferences, jobs, and more with the MCPR interns to feature in our monthly newsletters

Our interns are:

  • Highly organized

  • Driven and committed

  • Patient

  • Interested in STEM fields

  • Devoted to woman-based mentorship

  • Commit to community engagement

  • Good communicators

  • Adaptable

  • Leaders by taking initiative

Roles and Responsibilities

Our Spring 2024 Internships are low time commitment volunteer opportunities to work on long-term projects and have execution responsibilities within the organization.

  • Interns should commit to a minimum of ten weeks (with an opportunity for extension). Our interns meet bi-weekly with a supervisor and align on action tasks.

  • We generally expect our interns to commit 4 hours of work a week (including any meetings) to build momentum and complete tasks in a reasonable timeframe, but this can be flexible.

  • This is a great option for people looking for short-term skilled work experience, recommendation letters, or resume boosters.

Requirements

  • Must be a high school or college student

  • Highly recommended to have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

Application

Girls Code the World is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides resources, role models, and opportunities for young girls in science, technology, engineering, and math through STEM-related educational programming and extended mentorships. It was founded by Sydney Gibbard and Mina Shokoufandeh in 2018.

We work with a primarily socioeconomically disadvantaged and underrepresented community. Our curriculum for our educational programs should target our population's interests. This means our curriculum must be engaging for youth, should inspire them with role models that come from a similar background, and must expose them to a variety of opportunities within the STEM fields.

Girls Code the World is an Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, or protected veteran status and will not be discriminated against on the basis of disability.
